Drive Around Town: 4 Famous Landmarks to Visit Near Cottonwood, AZ

Take a day trip from Cottonwood to Dead Horse Ranch State Park to kayak on the lake.

Cottonwood, AZ is the town where the river meets the wine trail. This fun laid back place is rich in history, outdoor activities, and boutique shops. If you’re into hiking, want a quiet day on the water, or plan to eat your way around Old Town, you’ll love visiting these famous local landmarks.

1. Tuzigoot River Access Point

The Tuzigoot River Access Point, better known as the Tuzigoot RAP is a wonderful place to spend a day enjoying the Verde River. This area is part of Arizona’s State Parks and the Verde River Greenway. Load your kayak or canoe onto your 2022 Jeep Gladiator, throw your fishing gear and some snacks in the back, and fire the engine. Prepare to spend an amazing day drinking in the tranquil views of the Verde River and enjoying the beautiful outdoors surrounding Cottonwood.

2. Tuzigoot National Monument

No list of Cottonwood destinations would be complete without mentioning the Tuzigoot National Monument. This hilltop village was built by the Sinagua people about one thousand years ago. During your visit, you can explore the ruins while learning about the Sinagua. You’ll also find out about the people who excavated the site in the 1930s. It’s sure to be fascinating. Once your tour is complete, hike on the nature trails and enjoy the views of Tavasci Marsh and the Verde River Valley.

This national monument is open from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm daily and costs $10 per adult.

3. Historic Old Town Cottonwood

Cottonwood’s historic old town features 60 businesses lining the main street. Go antique shopping, buy beautiful artwork, and enjoy some wine tasting. Just remember to drink in moderation so you’re all set to drive home safely!

Once you’ve visited all the shops and had a tasty meal in Old Town, walk the 1.5-mile Jail Trail loop. Enjoy the shade of the Fremont cottonwood trees surrounding the banks of the Verde River.

4. Dead Horse Ranch State Park

There’s no better place to enjoy the great Arizona outdoors in Cottonwood than at Dead Horse Ranch State Park. Have a picnic by the river, walk on easy trails around the park, or head into the scenic Coconino National Forest. If you’re not into walking, you can bike or ride a horse on the Lime Kiln Trail.

Dead Horse Ranch is also a prime location for viewing wildlife. Some of the wildlife you may see includes gray foxes, river otters, Coues whitetail deer and California king snakes. Don’t worry, the snakes aren’t dangerous to humans. In fact, they help us out by eating rattlesnakes.
