1. Grand Canyon

How could we begin this list with anything but the most famous canyon in America? This wildly popular national park receives a whopping 5 million visitors per year. But for the lucky residents of Flagstaff, the park is only 90 minutes away.

 
The South Rim of the canyon is a huge tourist destination and is open year-round. Those seeking quiet should check out the North Rim, but be advised it’s closed during the winter months. Excursions down to the river below are also a fun option.

2. Sedona

About an hour south of Flagstaff lies the artsy town of Sedona. But this is one drive where the journey is as fantastic as the destination. Highway 89A winds past gorgeous rock formations and natural foliage as it descends into Oak Creek Canyon. In fact, this road was one of the first to be designated by the state as a scenic route.

Once in Sedona, you’ll have a blast browsing the art galleries, buying healing crystals at a New Age shop, or relaxing at a spa. Fine dining is guaranteed, and you are sure to return home newly rejuvenated.  

3. Petrified Forest

An alien landscape can be found about two hours east of Flagstaff. Though it may be hard to believe, a forest once existed here. Over time, the wood petrified leaving behind the colorful terrain you see today. While hiking, be on the lookout for fossils and ancient petroglyphs.

Another magical place that’s accessible at the north end of the park is the Painted Desert. Surround yourself with rocks “painted” in a rainbow of colors caused by minerals in the rock. Ranger-led tours are also an option if the idea of wandering out into the desolate landscape concerns you.

4. Prescott

For a journey back in time, check out the quaint town of Prescott. Visitors can experience a bit of the Old West as they walk the saloon-filled streets. Fast-paced Whiskey Row is the place to hear live music, while the Sharlot-Hall Museum displays the town’s pioneering past.

Prescott is also home to the World’s Oldest Rodeo. Since 1888, the Prescott Rodeo Grounds has hosted the feistiest horses, meanest bulls, and bravest cowboys and cowgirls in the country. The rodeo is part of the bigger Frontier Days Festival and definitely worth checking out.

5. Walnut Canyon National Monument

We’ll end the list with the attraction closest to the city. Nine miles from Flagstaff is a quiet canyon where visitors can hike, spy ancient cliff dwellings, and spot wildlife. It’s an absolute must-see.
