The RAM is one of the most iconic vehicles on the road, and certainly among trucks. It’s such a popular truck that RAM has been releasing a Classic version alongside the new models lately, and that’s true in 2020 as well. The 2020 RAM 1500 Classic has some great features to consider.
Classic Price and Feel
If you’re wondering why you’d release both a “Classic” and a regular version, it’s because the Classic is the type of truck some people really want to drive. Do you want to pay extra for fancy styling changes and a lot of tech? If you want the bells and whistles, of course, you can get that in the regular RAM 1500. But if you’re the type of driver who finds that stuff a distraction and just wants to pay a reasonable price for a sold, reliable utility truck, the Classic has been made especially for you.
Plenty of Options
Just because we want a truck that’s not all tricked out doesn’t mean we don’t want options–we just want our options to be in things like bed configurations and cab choices. The 1500 Classic comes in Tradesman, Express, and Warlock trims, and each offers you the choice of regular, crew, or quad cabs and 5′ 7″, 6′ 4″, or 9′ bed lengths. This truck works as hard as you do, so the options are tailored to what real working people need in their trucks. All the trims come standard with rear-wheel drive and have optional four-wheel drive. The standard Classic engine is a VG, 3.6-liter workhorse that generates 305hp and 269 lb-ft of torque. On all the trims you have the option to go up to a V8, 5.7-liter engine that will give you just shy of 400hp and 410 lb-ft of torque.
Smooth, Strong Feel
The 8-speed transmission is smooth and steady, making this truck a joy to drive. It has the power and rugged handsomeness of a classic work truck, but you’re definitely not stuck with old technology when it comes to the important things. The cabin is quiet, the suspension gives you a smooth ride no matter what you’re hauling or driving over, and the interior features are thoughtful rather than luxurious. All trims come with a hitch, USB ports, and power heated mirrors, for instance. If you go up to the
Express, you can get 17-inch alloy wheels, carpeted floors, and tinted glass windows. The Warlock offers 20-inch alloy wheels, a rear sliding window, and projector headlights with fog lamps.
Towing and Hauling Power
All the trims offer you the option to add on some useful things. You can get better traction with a limited-slip differential, a special tow package that gives you tow mirrors and trailer brake control, and even the RAMbox–a series of cargo bins that sit on the sides of the truck bed. Don’t get us wrong: technology is cool, and today’s trucks, including the new RAM, are amazing marriages of power, tech, and aesthetics. But if you’re in the market for a strong workhorse at a reasonable price that has just the tech you need without the stuff you don’t, test drive the Classic and see what you think.
